The research at IHSS is focused on the following:

•Protection of the quality and supply of fresh water resources
•Promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development

•Generation of political and bureaucratic commitment and support for community felt needs
•Increase of resources to human settlements as part of national economic development
•Strengthening local authorities to allow them to play a positive role in human settlements and shelter development
•Enhancing the effective involvement of community groups in human settlements development
•Improving the living environment in a sustainable and equitable manner preventing further environmental degrading and conserving natural and man made heritage and biological diversity

Research and Publications
A good number of researches and publications have been conducted at IHSS, whereas the recent ones include:
•Evaluation of Sustainable Zanzibar Programme, Community Infrastructure Upgrading Programme in Dar es Salaam, National Housing Profile and National Housing Programme for Tanzania.
•Currently the Institute is preparing a Citywide Strategy for Upgrading of Unplanned and Unserviced Settlements in Dar es Salaam.
