Deputy Vice Chancellor - Academic, Research and Consultancy

Prof. John Modestus Lupala is an Associate Professor of Town Planning and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Consultancy at Ardhi University (ARU). He is a Registered Town Planner. He did his PhD in Built Environment Analysis at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm in 2002. He has served in several positions at Ardhi University including; Manager  of ARU Transformation Programme of the then University College of Lands and Architectural Studies (UCLAS), Head of Department of Architecture, Dean of the School of Urban and Regional Planning, Director of the Institute of Human Settlements Studies, and Coordinator of ARU-Sida Capacity Building Programme.

He has served a Lecturer for over twenty years. He has conducted several research projects and supervised more than sixty students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is an author of four books, four book chapters, twenty-seven published journal articles, several research project reports. His research and publications have focused on urban planning, housing, informal settlements, public transport and built environment analysis. He has been a leader to more than twenty-one advisory and consultancy projects. In the year 2015, Professor Lupala was appointed to serve as a Director of Rural and Town Planning in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development where he served up to 2020. He was also appointed as Member to the National Task Force to transfer the National Capital from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma (2016-2020), Team Leader of preparation of Dodoma National Capital Master Plan. He is currently serving as Board Chairman of the Town Planners Registration Board of Tanzania.
