Initially, the Printing and Publishing Centre at ARU started in 1978 as a unit called the photo-laboratory under the Ardhi Institute. Following the institutional transformation program that led Ardhi Institute to become a Constituent College of the UDSM in 1996, the unit also changed its name and organizational structure to UCLAS Photographic and Printing Unit (UPPU). Then, in 2003, due to the need for new technology, quality publishing services, and the transformation of its functions, UPPU was renamed UCLAS Publishing Centre (UPC). The establishment of Ardhi University in 2007 led to the renaming of UPC to ARU Publishing Centre. ARU PC inherited all functions of UPC to serve both the ARU market and external clients. It was expected that this move would attract investors and promote more publishing operations, including the distribution of books, research information, and other literacy materials.
